  1. What are the Iowa Artist Directory & Rosters?

    The Iowa Artist Directory & Rosters are a resource for educators, performing arts presenters, private individuals, festivals, colleges, and other communities interested in finding and connecting with artists in Iowa.

    The Iowa Artist Directory & Rosters are also an online means of marketing for individual artists and artist groups who want to advertise their skills and services.

    Within the Iowa Artist Directory are three Juried Rosters : the Folk and Traditional Artist, Teaching Artist, and Performing Artist Rosters and two Non-Juried Listings: the Artist Directory and Public Art Artist Registry.

  2. What is the difference between the Juried and Non-Juried listings?

    Artists or artist groups listed on a Juried Roster have been selected by qualified reviewers according to criteria established by the Iowa Arts Council.

    • The Folk and Traditional Artists Roster lists artists or artists groups who have learned their skill or art through their cultural/ethnic heritage.

    • The Teaching Artists Roster lists artists or artist groups who are skilled in both their artistic discipline and as instructors.

    • The Performing Artists Roster lists artists or artists groups who have superior artistry and experience as professional presenting artists.
    A Non-Juried listings means that the listing is open to any Iowa artist or artist groups wishing to be included.
    • The Iowa Artist Directory lists any Iowa artist or artist group who want to share information about their artwork.

    • The Public Art Artists Registry lists Iowa artists or artist groups who are seeking opportunities to create or exhibit their public art.

  3. How do I find an artist or artist group?

    Use The Iowa Artist Directory's multiple search functions help locate and review the work of the artist or artist group you are looking for. You can search by Directory/Roster Listing, Discipline, Region, and/or Keyword.

    To find an artist:

    • Search by Resource: for example, to find an artist who does classroom residencies, select “Teaching Artist Roster,” and your results will be only those artists who are listed in that publication.

    • Search by Discipline: for example, to search for a dancer, select "dance" from the drop down menu, and the results will reflect all dance artists.

    • Search by Region:for example, to search for an artist who works in or around Des Moines, select "Central" from the drop down menu, and your results will display only artists who work in Central Iowa.

    • Keyword Search: insert words that describe the specific type of artist you are looking for, such as "watercolor" rather than simply, "painting". OR search for a specific artist by name.

    Absolutely! Artists provide their contact information sin the Directory so that they are available to those who want to reach them.

  5. How can an artist use the Iowa Artist Directory & Rosters?

    Artists can utilize the Directory to market themselves by listing their contact information, skills, services offered, and works samples.

  6. I am an Artist. How do I get on the Iowa Artist Directory & Rosters?

    Its easy!

    To register for the Iowa Artist Directory, go to the Sign Up page and fill out the form.

    To apply for a Roster, go to the About the Iowa Artist Directories & Rosters page and read the guidelines and application requirements for each Roster.

  7. Does the IAC conduct background checks on artists listed in these resources?

    No. The IAC does not conduct background checks on artists listed in the Iowa Artists Directory & Rosters. Artists are evaluated only on the merits of their artistic and professional experience. Schools and community groups should follow their established hiring procedures regarding criminal background checks for any personnel working with youth.

  8. What is folk and traditional art?

    Folk and traditional art encompasses the everyday knowledge, art, and lore that are passed from one person to another through imitation or word-of-mouth. Learned primarily through ethnic, religious, occupational, or family associations rather than through formal training, folklife genres include a diversity of forms: folk art... music... dance... crafts... narratives... (folk history, legends, tall tales, or jokes)... architecture... beliefs... rituals... celebrations... foods... games. By reflecting a group's way of looking at the world, traditional forms as well as occupational skills and knowledge all serve to identify and symbolize individuals and their communities.

  9. Who are folk and traditional artists?

    Folk and traditional artists are individuals from a particular cultural, ethnic, occupational, regional, religious or other self-identified group who produce, pass on, and preserve folk and traditional art forms that reflect the identity of that group, e.g. Meskwaki dancers, Lao weavers, Mennonite quilters, or Irish bagpipers.

  10. What is folk-inspired art?

    Folk-inspired art is produced by individuals and groups who are not part of the culture group that originally produced the art form at issue, regardless of the quality of the art.

  11. I lost my password. What should I do?

    No problem, we will e-mail your Password to you.
    Note: Passwords and User IDs are case-sensitive.

    Step 1. At the Artist Log On screen, select the I lost my Password link, located under the Log On button.
    Step 2. Enter your Email Address, then click the Submit button.
    Step 3. Your password will be emailed to you.
    Step 4. Once you receive the e-mail with your Password, come back to the Artist Center and use it to log on.

  12. I lost my User ID. What should I do?

  13. I can't log on. Why is this happening?

    There are three possible reasons for this:

    • Are you using the correct User ID and Password? If you lost your Password, please select I Lost my Password. for instructions. If you've forgotten your User ID, contact veronica.ohern@iowa.gov to set up a new one.

      Note: Passwords and User IDs are case-sensitive.

    • Your browser must be set up to accept cookies. In Microsoft Internet Explorer these settings can be changed through the Tools: Internet Options menu (on a PC) or the Preferences menu (on a Mac). In Netscape these setting can be changed through the Edit: Preferences menu of your browser for both PC and Mac.

    • JavaScript must be enabled. These settings can be changed via the Tools: Internet Options menu or Edit: Preferences menu of your browser.

  14. How do I change my User ID or Password?

    You can change your User ID or Password by using the following steps:

    Step 1. Log on to the Artist Center .
    Step 2. Click on the Artist Profile link on the Main Welcome Page.
    Step 3. On the Artist Profile page, click on the Change User ID and Password link.
    Step 4. Make the necessary modifications to your User ID and/or Password and then click the Submit button to save your new User ID and/or Password information.

    Note: The next time you log on to the Artist Center you will need to use your new Password.

  15. How do I change my name or discipline?

    Your application was approved, based on the initial discipline(s) you submitted. If you would like to change those disciplines or your name, you will need to contact the Iowa Arts Council at veronica.ohern@iowa.gov

  16. How do I remove my work from the Iowa Artist Directory & Rosters?

    You will need to contact the Iowa Arts Council to have your account removed from the site. E-mail them at veronica.ohern@iowa.gov
