General Description of Work: An artist and educator, Vaske teaches art in area colleges and schools, and has exhibited both nationally and internationally for almost twenty years. Residencies and permanent sculptures are just a part of her artistic ability. Working collaboratively to create permanent public sculpture, she has received awards for community education by the state of Iowa. A new focus in her work centers on other cultures and unusual materials. Mask making, marbled paper as a lost art form, and art from other countries are a focus in her residencies.
Services Offered 1: Residencies and Workshops (education) - Students enjoy Barbara's rapport and support in workshops that are designed to meet their needs. For workshop topics and more information, please see Barbara's entry in the Teaching Artists Roster.
Residency Description: Barb sees herself as a problem-solver in the arts. Her background as an educator helps her design a variety of successful residency projects for both large or small groups. As a sculptor she often collaborate with sponsors to create finished public sculptures for the community using pictures, objects, or cast parts to tell a story about place. A slide presentation about public art and Mexican art and culture as well as authentic objects of art can be presented to large school groups or businesses. Workshops in folk-inspired Mexican crafts for K-adult can also be combined with the slide presentation for a full day or week of art appreciation.
